Planning Your
back to WEDDING GUIDE
Second, it’s a fun chance to showcase your personalities in a laid-back, meaningful location (and yes, fur babies are always welcome!). While these sessions are perfect for save-the-dates, I’ve done engagement shoots as early as 18 months out and as late as a few weeks before the wedding (though it's always best to schedule them earlier than later).
There’s a lot to think about when planning your session, and since I get asked many of the same questions, I created this guide to walk you through everything you need to know.
We’ll cover what to wear, tips for bringing along pets, location ideas, and more!
I'm so excited to be working with you both, and I can’t wait for our time together during your engagement session! It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous. I still get nervous when I’m in front of the camera — and I do this for a living!
I love engagement sessions for a few reasons. First, they give you a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera. Most couples need a little time to warm up and get a feel for how I work and guide you through poses. Wedding day timelines can be tight — sometimes we only have 15 minutes for portraits — so I’ve found that couples who’ve done engagement sessions ahead of time tend to feel more relaxed, which makes all the difference in their wedding day photos.
Just a quick note — if you're feeling a little unsure or not totally excited about being in front of the camera for an engagement session, you’re definitely not alone — and that’s completely okay. You don’t have to be a model or know what to do. I’ll guide you through everything, and I promise we’ll keep it light and easygoing.
Most of my couples (even the guys) are surprised at how quickly it starts to feel natural — and by the end, they’re saying it was way more fun than expected.
A NOTE TO
Engagement sessions can take place anywhere from immediately following a proposal to several weeks before the wedding. There really isn’t a “good” or “bad” time to take your photos. Typically a session is planned based on a particular “look” a couple has in mind, such as shooting amongst spring flowers, fall foliage, or in the snow. Or it simply may come down to your schedules and availability, or when you need the final photos for your save-the-date cards, etc.
Sessions typically last about an hour to an hour and a half, and when possible I love to begin about two hours before sunset, during "golden hour". It's always ideal to shoot when the sun is lower in the sky to avoid harsh shadows and bright "hot" spots.
Please reach out as soon as possible after booking to let me know your thoughts about when you'd like to do your engagement session. All sessions are booked first come, first serve and must be scheduled prior to wedding day. If you wait until the last minute or during busy wedding season (May to October), scheduling options will be much more limited. If you work during the week and prefer a weekend day for your session, it's even more important to reach out early to get at least a tentative date on the calendar!
While most engagement sessions take place between April and November, sessions can be planned all year round. Most couples choose a season based on the type of scenery they'd like in their photos. Each season has its own unique charm, but there are a few things to keep in mind:
Winter sessions are magical, with snowflakes and wintery backdrops. However, if you’re planning a winter engagement session, be prepared for shorter daylight hours. Sessions in the evening could begin as early as 2:30 pm to catch the sunset, if it's not overcast outside. I recommend dressing in layers so that you can stay warm between shots, and don't forget gloves, hats, or mittens! Bring extra makeup for touch-ups and tissues in case of runny nose or eyes.
Snowfall, hot cocoa, and cozy coats
Winter
Spring in Montana can be unpredictable, with temperatures still on the cooler side and the chance of rain. While spring technically begins in March, I typically don’t start shooting until mid-April or later when it starts to feel more like true spring. It’s a good idea to plan both a primary date and a backup date in case of rain or other unpredictable weather. Bring light layers, as mornings and evenings can still be chilly, but you’ll get those beautiful blooms and fresh air!
Fresh flowers and sunny days
Spring
Summer offers long golden evenings, making it a great time for photos. With the later sunsets, sessions can often begin as late as 7:00 or 7:30 pm. If you’re planning a summer session, be sure to bring extra makeup, sunscreen, and a few towels to stay fresh throughout the session. You can even make it more fun by incorporating the river or a lake into your shoot, with the option to get your feet wet and cool off.

Summer
Fall in Montana is stunning, with vibrant colors and cool, crisp air. It’s a favorite time for many couples because of the gorgeous foliage and comfortable temperatures. If you're planning an autumn session, be sure to bring layers as the temperature can drop quickly in the evening. Also, the leaves are typically at their peak color in October, so plan your session for this time if you want those iconic fall colors in the background (and plan early!!).

Fall
If your wedding is local, save-the-dates should be sent between 6 and 8 months before the wedding. For a destination wedding, aim to send them out 8 to 10 months in advance.
If you plan to use your engagement photos for your save-the-dates, I recommend scheduling your session at least two months before you want to send them out. This timeline allows enough cushion for unpredictable weather, editing, designing your cards, and printing, ensuring that everything is ready to go in plenty of time.
Also, keep timing in mind for other uses of engagement photos, such as if you plan to use them for your invitations, wedding website, gifts for family, or other personalized items.

I absolutely love when couples choose a location that holds meaning for them and their unique love story. Whether it’s a place you frequent together, the spot where he proposed, or somewhere that holds special memories for both of you, meaningful locations always add an extra layer of personal connection to your photos.
It’s also important to consider the "look" and vibe you want for your photos — do you envision a setting outdoors in nature, having a fun date night together, or maybe even shooting downtown for a more urban look?
There are no limitations, and I’m open to any ideas you have in mind! For example, one couple had me capture photos of them at various locations around Missoula, creating a fun scavenger hunt game for their wedding guests! From local parks with mountain backdrops to forest and river settings, unique places like butterfly houses and buddha gardens, the possibilities are endless.
western montana Engagement Locations
While I primarily shoot engagement sessions in Missoula and surrounding areas, I’ve had the privilege of photographing sessions in locations ranging from Kalispell and Hamilton to Anaconda. If there’s a place that holds special meaning to you as a couple, don’t hesitate to reach out! We can explore the possibility of making it happen.
Travel fees may apply depending on the location and my availability, but I'm always open to discussing your ideas and finding a way to make it work!

I absolutely love including fur babies in engagement photos. It adds a personal touch and can bring out some really sweet moments! Just keep in mind that we’ll need to choose a pet-friendly location.
I recommend having your pet with you during the first part of your session, and then either dropping them off or having a friend take them home afterward. While we won’t include your pet in every single photo, it can be helpful to have someone available to hold onto them between shots.
To make sure your pet is ready for photos, try exercising them before the session, and bring along their favorite toy or treats to keep them engaged (a "squeaker" toy is also great to help get their attention). Depending on their fur type, grooming them beforehand is also a good idea, and don’t forget to bring a lint roller for your own clothing to make sure everything looks clean and tidy.
Coordinate your color palette rather than trying to match exactly. I recommend picking 2-3 colors and spreading them throughout your outfits. This adds depth and variety while still keeping everything cohesive. For example, one person could wear a soft pastel blue while the other wears a blush pink, or you could both wear earth tones like olive green and tan.
Avoid large logos, text, or overly busy patterns, as they can distract from your faces. Instead, opt for subtle textures and patterns that complement each other without drawing too much attention.
Also, keep the location in mind when choosing outfits! For instance, if we’re shooting in a green field, light green or yellow dresses might blend in too much with the background. In winter, bright white can be tricky when shooting in snow, so consider wearing richer, deeper tones like burgundy, navy, or forest green.
for everyone
Heels can help elongate legs and elevate your outfit, but if they’re not comfortable or if we’re shooting in a grassy or rocky area, bring a backup pair of shoes to wear in between shots. Consider a cute pair of flats or sandals for the breaks!
Soft, pastel colors generally photograph better than bright neon or fluorescent colors, which can cast unwanted reflections on your skin. Soft pinks, blush, lavender, and sage look especially beautiful in photos and tend to complement most skin tones. Bright neon colors can create color casts that are tough to edit out, so it’s best to avoid them.
If you're shooting in the fall or winter, consider layering your outfit with a stylish jacket, scarf, or sweater. This not only keeps you warm but also adds great variety to your images.
for the ladies
Statement jewelry can bring an extra pop of color or texture to your photos. Bold necklaces, chunky earrings, or delicate bracelets are all great ways to personalize your look. A simple dress can be transformed with the right accessories, so feel free to play around!
Flowy fabrics look amazing in photographs and add dynamic movement and interest. Dresses and tops with sleeves are most flattering to the arms. A cute jacket, cardigan, blazer, or sweater can all be fun to play with, as well as adding variety to your images. Hats are also super fun and fashionable, adding extra personality, especially for outdoor or boho-style shoots.
Choose an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable. The most important thing is that you feel great in whatever you decide to wear, as confidence will always shine through in your photos!
for the ladies
While professional hair and makeup are not required, they can certainly help you look and feel your best. They will help your hair and makeup last longer and stay looking fresh, even in wind or humidity.
If you'd like professional makeup done and we’re shooting in or near Missoula, I work with Skin Chic and can set up an appointment for you. Just let me know, and I’ll be happy to coordinate! They do absolutely gorgeous work!
If you’re considering a spray tan, I generally recommend waiting. Spray tans can create uneven skin tones or an unnatural orange hue, which is difficult to fix during editing.
For makeup, it’s best to stick to classic looks that feel like “you.” Opt for a look that will stand the test of time and still feel timeless years down the road.
for the ladies
A crisp button-up shirt with jeans or slacks always looks great and timeless. For a more polished look, you can layer on a sweater or blazer.
Avoid overly busy patterns. Instead, stick with solid colors or subtle patterns like plaid or small gingham. These tend to photograph well and ensure the focus stays on you and your partner.
If you're opting for a more casual look, consider pairing a well-fitted T-shirt or casual shirt with a jacket or sweater. In cooler months, a knit sweater or stylish jacket is both practical and fashionable. What's most important is that your clothes are well-fitted and comfortable.
And please don't forget to iron your shirt before the session to avoid wrinkles, which can be more noticeable in photos. Small details are also always a nice touch, such as a a nice watch or bracelet.

When possible, I love to capture photos of your rings while you're getting ready. To ensure your rings look their best, it’s a great idea to have your engagement ring cleaned (or clean it yourself) so it’s extra shiny for the photos!
To clean your rings at home, soak them in warm water with a few drops of dishwashing soap for 20 to 40 minutes. After soaking, gently brush with a soft toothbrush, rinse, and repeat as needed until they’re nice and sparkly.
If there's a chance of inclement weather around the time of your shoot, I recommend that we pencil in a tentative date and then stay flexible as it gets closer. Some times of year just require a little more wiggle room than others. That said, I don’t want you to stress — if the weather isn’t suitable for photos, we’ll either reschedule or, if timing is important, move to an indoor location that still fits your vision.
I typically begin keeping an eye on the forecast a few days before your session and will reach out if it looks like we may need to make adjustments. In that case, we can either set a backup date or shift your shoot to a nearby day or time with better conditions.
If there’s light rain in the forecast, bringing along a couple of clear umbrellas is a great idea. They photograph beautifully and won’t create any distracting color casts on your skin.

Inclement Weather
Absolutely! I'm always happy to incorporate props into your photos, especially if they are meaningful to you guys. You might want to pop a bottle of champagne during your shoot and bring along a pair of wine glasses. A bouquet of flowers, a blanket to sit on, a special bandana for your pet ("My humans are getting married!"), bubbles, or confetti can all make for fun and personal additions.
Alternatively, if there’s an activity you love doing together — like fishing, for example — we could plan photos around that. In those cases, the props become a natural and meaningful part of your session.

what about
When it comes to posing for your engagement photos, you don’t need to worry about a thing! I’ll guide you through the entire process, starting with simple, natural movements that won’t feel stiff or like you're being posed at all. If I suggest something that feels a little silly, it’s probably because I know it’ll lead to a real laugh — and that’s the moment I’m really after! I might give you prompts like, “run up from behind her, wrap your arms around her, and kiss her on the cheek,” or “stand behind her, hold your arms out, interlace your fingers, and pretend you’re flying like an airplane.”
Throughout your session, I’ll also keep an eye on your hair, makeup, and outfits to make sure everything stays in place. My goal is to help you relax and enjoy yourselves — most couples end up having way more fun than they expected (pets included!).

A note on
A fun idea for your engagement session is to plan a casual date together — and have me tag along to capture it! The photos in this section are from a session where the couple went on a downtown Missoula date with their dog, Zeke. We started with drinks at Montgomery Distillery (not pictured), grabbed ice cream at Sweet Peaks, rode the carousel at Caras Park, and finished with a walk and some sweet family photos by the river.
Even if you don’t go this route for your session, the end of your engagement shoot is the perfect time to plan a special date night. You’ll already be dressed up and looking your best — why not celebrate with dinner, drinks, or something fun afterward?
As soon as your session is over, I’ll get your images backed up and begin the editing process. You can expect to receive a few sneak peeks within a day or two — just a little something to hold you over! Your full gallery will be ready within three weeks of your shoot, though I often deliver sooner when possible.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read through this guide! I hope it’s helped you feel more prepared and excited for your engagement session. If you have any questions, need a recommendation, or there’s something I didn’t cover — please don’t hesitate to reach out! You can email me anytime at carin@carinrene.com. I’m always happy to help and/or brainstorm with you!
